Voluntary karma yoga at my mother’s.
In 2021, when I applied to Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda for Sannyas Diksha, I made it a condition that I would continue to live with my mother. Because I felt indebted to her for what she did for me. At the time when I was permanently staying in the mountains and caves, she had the foresight to pay health and social security insurance for me, which I had no thought of at the time. If she did not, it would have undesirable consequences for me. Swamiji agreed with this free decision of mine. He even reiterated that I should take care of my mother in her old age. Which is why I live in a shared household with her. But I perform this seva on the principle of vairagya, detachment from every other person, as is already required of monks. I prefer to cook for myself because my mother is not a vegetarian and does not follow the principles of sattvic diet. I eat in an almost ascetic way. My ideal is one meal a day: soup with fresh vegetables, rice and bread – I think that is enough. I am happy and balanced, I am not attached to anything at all, I am serving my mother practically on the principle of voluntary vairagya – detachment, i.e. without mental attachment. I still go to forest hermitages and meditate in caves. I think both my mother and I need that solitude. It has a very beneficial effect on us. The most important Principle of the Spiritual Journey, in my opinion, is real vairagya, not just internal, but also physical one, i.e. detachment from every other person, however much we love them. My mother has always been the incarnation of the Indian goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, in our family. Unfortunately, however, she smokes cigarettes excessively, eats meat, does not pray and does not meditate, so she has severe health problems as a result. But she is a Christian, so she will hopefully recover from her depression.
