Vairagya – solitude as the most important prerequisite for yoga.
Do not be deceived by the spiritual state of the people around you. You have to be able to leave them physically and then internally. You cannot retain any worldly affection, otherwise it will bring you back to the world of suffering. You must see your parents clearly as they are. They basically played a reproductive function and did not go to God themselves. Even Jesus says that you must leave your parents, wife and relatives if you want to follow Him, which means going to a monastery or hermitage. All the evil demons will surely remind you of your obligations and responsibilities arising from attachment to your mother, wife and the like, and thus lead many back to illusion and hell on earth. You will best serve your fellows, contrary to what public opinion says, if you free yourself from them and quietly go to God. Those who do not follow God as their only goal are undeserving of me, says the Lord. You have to develop a certain cruelty towards worldly relatives who mentally terrorize you and lead you astray. You have to develop “cruelty” from the point of view of worldly people in order to free ourselves and break the perilous curse of worldly life once and for all. You have to break the inner bonds of the animal kingdom. This I consider to be the most important thing in your life. You who want spiritual experience, come to God. In spite of all the suffering descending upon you, do not interrupt your solitude. Those who fail to do so return to the human world and take the path of service to duality, karma yoga. Do not expect to find someone else’s energy supply in your own mental crisis resulting from the interruption of the supply of the drug that is the need of human company. In solitude, the power of the ego disappears and the ability to love is born. Beware of false friendships and camaraderie. Rarely do you find a faithful, sincere friend who will be able to follow you on the spiritual journey. Never embrace a friend too intimately unless you have tested him well for a long time before. We are only interested in the friendship with our inner and physical Master, for it liberates us. Beware, therefore, of all kinds of spiritual communities, for they too can become an obstacle on your way to God. For this reason, experienced sages also left the monasteries and went to the forest to the solitude of hermitages, where they attained the state of holiness. True yoga has always been, is, and will always be a solitary affair, for few – despite many false appearances – are interested in the higher state of consciousness of your being. Read what the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Bible, says about this solitude. Be sure not to be domesticated by secular society.
