Vairagya – the ideal of voluntary hermitage.
What is vairagya? It is a voluntary detachment, for example, from one’s wife and companions. It is not enough to do it internally as some mystics teach. It must be done, if possible, in a physical way, by leaving home for a hermitage in the mountains, in the forests, in the countryside. Initially, however, it is enough to practice hermitage quietly even behind the closed door of your room, all the while meditating with the mantra and contemplating the higher meaning of earthly existence. It also means renouncing worldly possessions and sexual energy, and concentrating only on God and the Divine Self. It is not the literal hermitage according to the Catholic faith. From a Christian perspective, I may not be perceived as a typical “hermit” at all, although from a higher perspective, I am still a hermit in Reality. I am a vairagya, a yogi and a hermit in the sense of yogic philosophy. Life in the hermitage means the complete suppression of the thoughts of one’s own “self” and listening to the Higher Self, the Divine Self, God in inner Silence. The most important knowledge is atmagyan, the knowledge of one’s soul, which is part of the Universal Soul, or God.
